We've come a long way since we
received our first deposit of 34 pounds, from Waitera te
Karei, on September 28th in 1850.
In those days, the Bank's accountant was paid an annual
salary of 20 pounds, so his deposit was sizeable.
In 1921, the bank opened a second branch in the New
Plymouth suburb of Fitzroy, and in 1946 a third opened
its doors in the township of Waitara. In 1964, the Bank
reached out to the rest of the province with a name
change to Taranaki Savings Bank, and the opening of a
branch in Stratford.
With the loosening of regulations on banking in the
1970s, the Bank's position was sufficiently sound for it
to take maximum advantage of its newfound freedom. And
when the industry was finally deregulated in the mid
1980s,
TSB Bank was strong enough to stand aside from the
amalgamation of the country's Trustee banks.
Today, TSB Bank operates 15 highly successful branches
throughout Taranaki, with state-of-the-art IT systems
providing access to the rest of New Zealand and the
world. But our values are the same as they always were.
